What I want you to know…
With love, from your photographer.
1. Trust Me.
Some of you will know me when you book me as your photographer. A lot of you don’t.
It’s weird, right? Someone comes into your home with a fancy camera and a giant lens. They boss you around ‘stand here’ ‘do that’ ‘look over there’ ‘not there’ ‘there’ ‘smile’ ‘don’t smile’ ‘up down turn around’ etc…
But I need you to trust me. I don’t ask you to do something unless there is a reason behind it. I don’t make you do things with the goal of making you feel uncomfortable. I would never make you do anything that I wouldn’t do myself. I do it because I know that you’ll look amazing. I know that when I send you those images. You’ll be stoked.
Which leads me to my next point…
2. Don’t go all Pinterest crazy on me.
Pinterest is an amazing social media platform. Anything you want on there- you’ll find it. If you’ve got ideas for your photoshoot, sure, send them to me. At the end of the day, it’s your photoshoot and it’s your money being spent. Give me an idea of what you’re after.
Don’t go Pinterest crazy and expect me to perfectly replicate what you’ve found! I’m not that photographer. They have their style and I have mine. I like to think you hired me because you liked my work. So… as I said before… TRUST ME!
3. You get what you pay for.
Not just with me. With any photographer. Those that charge a lot of money for their shoots are worth it. Those that charge peanuts for their shoots…are probably worth that too.
I don’t think I’m any better or worse than any other photographer. I just know that I’m me. I do things my way. I’ve worked hard to learn what I know. I’ve worked hard to save up enough money to buy the equipment I own. I work hard at your photoshoot and I work hard whilst I post process your images.
We didn’t just pluck a number out of a hat and slap a $ sign in front of it. My prices reflect the time that I will spend at your shoot and behind my computer editing your images. My prices have been worked out and broken down to reflect my time spent working and my talent.
So if you don’t like my prices, that’s totally fine. I encourage you to do your research and find a photographer who has prices that suit you!
4. I get really nervous before ALL my shoots.
True story. I check , double check and triple check my equipment before I get in the car. I charge my batteries and then chuck them on the charger again for confirmation that they are charged. I take several SD cards with me even if I know i’ll hardly need one. I leave early in case there is traffic (even when I know there won’t be).
I know that I’m good enough, thats why you hired me right? But I still stress that you may not like your photos (even though I know you’ll love them).
I worry about the weather, the sunlight, will there be other people getting in our way, will there be another photographer there, will you turn up late and we miss the best light, did I charge my batteries? You get the idea.
I’m not a complete stress head when it comes to my photoshoots. I am confident in myself. I just get a bit nervous!
Even though I have Plan B’s for all of the above, I just care so much about your photos and want everything to be perfect. I do everything I possibly can to make sure that everything IS perfect!
5. There is no ‘make awesome’ button on photoshop.
You are who you are and photoshop is what it is!
It makes me sad when people say ‘can you just photoshop my wrinkles out, oh and my fat rolls, and make my boobs bigger, my bum smaller, my hair better and my teeth perfect’.
You know that you’re beautiful the way you are, right?
You’re 100% perfect in the skin you’re in! I hate to break it to you, but I don’t really edit my images all that much. Sure, they all get run through photoshop but it’s usually a slight lightening/ brightening, resizing, maybe a black & white… but that’s it…
There are things that I haven’t learnt how to do in photoshop- on purpose. I don’t know how to get rid of wrinkles, I don’t know how to make people skinny-er, I don’t know how to remove a person from a photo or add a new person in. I like to keep it natural.
So just love yourself! Be natural!!
Read all about my love of being natural here in my project ‘A natural woman‘.
6. I hate having to promote myself on social media.
What does that even mean, you ask? I believe that ‘word of mouth’ is so powerful. I can advertise, I can hire a marketing guru, I can annoy the poop out of my followers and ask them to book me. At the end of the day, people want recommendations.
We all prefer to ask ‘does anyone know a good chippy’ and get the contact details for a guy that did a job for a friend and was brilliant. I know I’d prefer that, then to ‘google’ someone who I have never met and no one else knows and just hope for the best.
You want to know that the person you are hiring comes highly recommended by someone else. You want that person to justify the work of your chippy, your accountant or your photographer.
So, if you’ve truly loved my work, please recommend me to your friends. Please share my work and tell them how stoked you are. Help me out with this ‘word of mouth’ goodness. Please!
7. I’m an emotional person.
Especially at weddings. It’s likely that I’ll cry at some point. Especially when people are in love. That makes me happy cry. If you’re totally loved up with your brand new bundle of baby goodness. That will definitely set me off.
Don’t worry about it. In fact just ignore it. It happens all the time. I just love seeing people happy. I love people in love. I absolutely love seeing people who are totally stoked with the bundle of amazingness that they created.
I get teased about it at home all the time. I cry in every episode of Masterchef too.
8. I want to know what you think.
Photography is a little bit tough when it comes to this. It’s hard not to take it personal. What started out as a hobby and a passion has turned into a ‘job’. Although it never really feels like work- it really is! It’s my job!
However it’s still something I’m passionate about. It’s something I work hard to perfect and it’s something that I just want other people to love and be totally happy with.
So if you’re not happy, then yeah, I’ll probably get a bit bummed about it. But I need to know. There isn’t any point you walking away devastated about your photos and telling me that they are awesome. It doesn’t help you, it doesn’t help me and it doesn’t help the next person who books me. Tell me.
You know what I’ll do about it- I’ll reshoot your photoshoot for you. On me.
(Unless it’s a wedding, because that puts us in a pickle…but I will still honour this and re-shoot some images with you).
I want you to be happy. I want you to walk away with photos you love and memories to put up on the fridge for always. Over the years I’ve prepared myself much better for this sort of thing. So let’s make a deal and you just tell me what you really think!
9. The big one. It devastates me when you put instagram filters over the images that I took.
I also can’t tell you that you’re not allowed to do this. Because you are. Once I give those images to you, you’re allowed to do what you want.
I just know that the photo looks so good the way that I gave it to you. I’ve taken an image that I know looks good and I’ve given it the editing it needs. I also know that you look beautiful in that photo. So when people throw a filter over it to make themselves look tanned or whatever it is you’re going for, I’m just sitting here thinking nooooooo!!!
That being said, they are your photos and you can do what you want. Just credit me as your photographer by tagging me!!
10. I love photography. I do. I love it. I don’t love all types of photography, but I love the types of photography that I offer.
I have tried a lot of things in the photography world. Above all, my favourite is wildlife photography. The amazing thing here is that when I travel, this is my hobby. When I’m home, photography is my job. It’s nice to be able to separate the two.
The types of photography that I offer are the types that I know I’m good at. I don’t offer things I’m not confident just for the sake of making some money. It’s not what I’m about.
You deserve to have the best memories to keep forever. That’s what I am passionate about. That’s what I will give you.
So…. talk to me! Message me, e mail me, call me, meet me for coffee! I want to get to know you and I want you to get to know me. I’m an open book when it comes to photography. I’ll never lie to you and I’ll alway make sure we are on the same page!
